Barrier-free Access to Lectural and Learning Videos in Higher Education (BaLLviHo)
This working group aims to provide needs- and diversity-orientated teaching of university content in video format: conventional teaching videos have strong barriers for some students that are often difficult to overcome. This applies in particular to visually impaired and blind students as well as hard of hearing and deaf students.
Specifically, we are therefore creating educational videos that convey the key content of data analysis, mathematics and statistics in an accessible format.
This includes the provision of
- Captions
- Translation of the videos into German Sign Language (DGS) by a deaf sign language interpreter embedded in the video
- Audio Description (AD) and
- Descriptive Transcripts
The concept behind the barrier-free videos is based on the module that won an award from the Stifterverband and the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation. „Daten Lesen Lernen“ (DaLeLe) ('learning to read data'). This module aims to establish broad and generally available material for low-threshold teaching of basic data analysis skills to all Bachelor's students. Based on the ‘DaLeLe4All’ project, the working group ‘Barrier-free Access to Lectural and Learning Videos in Higher Education’ (BaLLviHo) was founded, which transfers the barrier-free preparation to videos of other courses such as ‘Mathematics for Economics’ and ‘Statistics for Economics’.
