In memory of Elfriede Hermann (1960-2025)

The Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology deeply mourns the passing of Prof. Dr. Elfriede Hermann, who died on 17 February 2025 at the age of 64 after a long and serious illness.

Appointed Professor of General Anthropology with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region in 2012, Elfriede Hermann left a profound mark on our institute. Her passion for social and cultural anthropology, her dedication to the people of the Pacific, and her research on climate change shaped our academic community. She was an unwavering advocate for her students, inspiring many with her knowledge, generosity, and commitment.

We have lost not only a brilliant scholar but also a cherished colleague whose kindness, integrity, and wisdom provided guidance and reassurance to those around her. Her untimely passing deeply saddens us, and we will always honor her memory. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family and loved ones.

Mit einer akademischen Trauerfeier möchten wir Prof. Dr. Elfriede Hermann gemeinsam gedenken. Wir laden alle, die sich mit ihr verbunden fühlen, herzlich ein, sich am 4. Juli 2025 gemeinsam mit uns an die zusammen verbrachte Zeit zu erinnern. Die Feier findet um 11.00 Uhr im Emmy Noether-Saal (Wilhelmsplatz, Göttingen) statt.

Neben Beiträgen ihrer akademischen Weggefährt*innen werden auch einige musikalische Videodokumente aus dem Pazifikraum präsentiert. Im Anschluss gibt es die Gelegenheit, im Foyer bei Getränken und einem kleinen Imbiss ins Gespräch zu kommen.
